Codex leaves the code behind and enters design

On June 2nd, OpenAI expanded Codex beyond software development. Six role-based plugins, a function to generate interactive internal websites, and annotations that now work on documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. The goal seems to be transforming Codex into a work tool for any profile, without writing a single line of code.

What has been launched

Six specific role-based plugins, each with their apps, instructions, and pre-built workflows — totaling 62 applications and 110 skills. The creative production plugin turns a brief into reviewable assets — ad variations, campaign dashboards, product images for e-commerce — connecting with Figma, Canva, Shutterstock, Picsart, and Fal. The product design plugin follows the same path: exploring directions, auditing user flows, and prototyping from an active URL, with work continuable in Figma or Canva. The others cover data analysis, sales, equity investment, and investment banking. And more are coming: corporate finance, private equity, marketing strategy, strategic consulting, and legal.

Alongside the plugins, OpenAI introduces Codex Sites, in preview for Business and Enterprise: interactive internal websites generated from a prompt — dashboards, launch hubs, planners — shareable via URL within the workspace. They also expand Annotations: previously only in code and websites, now also in documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, allowing editing of a specific block without recreating the rest.

What this means

The numbers provide context: over 5 million people use Codex weekly, and those who don't code already make up 20% — growing three times faster than technical profiles.
